Absinthe Adventure

Well, after over twenty years of looking, I finally have a bottle of absinthe!!!!! For those of you who know me, I'm a student and BIG fan of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists. Van Gogh, Gaughan, Matisse, Picasso, and Degas are among my favorites.


Absinthe is made from Wormwood and has been illegal in this country for almost 100 years, but the times have changed. It's slightly hallucinogenic and somewhat addictive, or so they claim. The pictures above are from the first glass I made. All the things I've heard over the years are true: the "Green Fairy" has the taste of a lemony-anise drink and the "buzz" is "odd" it's hard to explain but MUST be experienced to understand. For those of you who have seen the movie" Moulin Rouge": it's what they drink before going to the Moulin Rouge for the first time.


The mixing ritual is half the fun: it must be mixed with chilled water dribbled over sugar cubes placed on a special slotted spoon. This "looshe" turns the liquor from a clear body into a green cloudy drink and releases the trujone which is the active ingredient. This gives it the nickname "The Green Fairy". CHEERS!!!!!!
